How to make an Axle on a wooden toy car?

I’m building an old style wooden toy car. The problem is I don’t know how to make the axle run smoothly (since it’s made out of wood). Are there any other methods to make an axle that has no friction? It doesn’t have to be made out of wood.

Btw, I don’t have access to ball bearings so don’t suggest anything fancy like that.

  2. There’s no such thing as friction-free; you have a couple of choices:
Use a wooden dowel such as a meat skewer, through a drilled hole.
You’d need to rub the dowel with soap or paraffin wax to reduce friction.
Another approach, is to drill a hole in the wooden wheel,
then use a nail into the wooden car body to hold it.

  3. On my toy cars, I use paste wax to help the wheels turn on the axles, however I use glued in axles and the wheels rotate on the stationary axle. Adding metal washers between the wheels and the car body help as well.
