Where can I get a kit for making the chinchilla wooden play toys?

wooden toy
Shirt-n-Tie-Boy asked:

Is there somewhere I can get things like the different colours of food dye, ready shaped wooden blocks, different wires and hook/clips etc?

We are expanding on our chinchilla family and our 2 enclosures are huge and it is expensive to be frequently kitting them out with the wood chew toys from Pets At Home.
I also buy pine wood from B+Q (often the scraps for 20p for a huge length of wood) and I make my own shelfs, runs, ladders etc. I will post a pic of my chinchilla cage in a future question as it is 6ft tall and i’m very proud of it! I had to modify it last week due to a surprise birth.

I really wanted to buy a box of a few hundred wooden pieces (circles and squares etc with holes in the middle and different colours already dyed would be a bonus).

  2. GOOD QUESTION…There is a bankrupt stock outlet that operates on eBay called BankruptAreUs. I got some Chinchilla bit n bobs, only last week from them. Cheap as well.

  3. Look under the classifieds for supplies. You can buy the parts or the assembled toys and chews.

  4. we usually go to shops like b&q or wickes, as long as you check on chinchilla sites which woods are safe then this is a very cheap way of doing it. for example, the chinchilla leap n ledges are about £4 in pets at home, we bought a piece of wood for £3, some screws for £1 and made about 8 leap n ledges out of it.

if you dont fancy shaping wood yourself then kids toy shops have wooden blocks that are cheaper than pets at home (depending which toy shop you are in) and are dyed safely as kids can often put then in their mouth.

also bird boxes (of the right dimensions to fit a chinchilla) from smaller pet shops are often much cheaper than chinchilla nesting boxes and cutting up old carpet tubes saves a fortune, my chinchillas can get thought a pets at home tube in about 2 weeks!

  5. If you want cheap and cheerful I recommend going DIY on the situation. You sound like a fairly handy person so just pop down to a local hardwars stor and buy some plywood, and other bits (preferably pine because its cheap and non toxic) for colour you can use food colouring (most paints are harmful and the chinchillas are likely to chew) and yeah, a few screws and hooks etc and your off! Oh and please don’t use treated timber (the wood with a slight green tint) because it is toxic.
have fun with your chinchilla army!
