Why do my hamsters keep trying to chew the cage bars instead of the wooden cage toys?

The hamsters provide much more entertainment with all their tricks than I ever expected them to.

  2. The metal bars help their teeth more than the wooden ones… My two hamspters do it ALL the time! How annoying is it!! LOL! x

  4. They are trying to get out. This should tell you that it is not good (for the hamster) to be kept in a cage

  6. Mine used to spend hours stropping their teeth on the bars of their cages. I think they were trying to weaken them to get out. One in fact did manage to get his bars loose, and escaped. He returned in about 30 minutes thinking he had found a nice new home in the wainscotting, packed all his bedding into his face, ( you’ve never seen anything so funny – his pouches were HUGE!), and tried to make another run for it – but I caught him and repaired the bars.

  7. They’re unhappy being in a cage and want to get out and be free like they were meant to be.

  8. they are trying to get out- I think the cage is too small. Imagine if you were stuck in a little cage all the time!

If you have to keep hamsters then get them one of those huge cages with tubes going all over the place and lots of little rooms and areas to explore so they don’t get bored

  9. their natural instinct is to escape. try buying a larger cage, or take them out of the cage every so often and let them run around a run or even a room, but keep an eye on them at ALL times.

  10. Hamster teeth are constantly growing longer, so they need something really hard to chew on to keep them short. The wood may not be hard enough. Our rat gets beef bones to chew on.

Those plastic cages with the tubes can be a problem since the hamsters will chew holes in them and might swallow the plastic bits. We had one cage like that and it was in the trash in a month.

  11. They want to get out, it is very bnad for their teeth, put lemon juice on the bars, and move around his toys or take one out and put another one in, but change the cage everyday, also play with him, he should be happier and not want to leave if you do that.

  12. Try getting more chew toys and wood blocks and stick em on the side. My hmatser would nvr stop and i just put a stick and poked him once (not being mean softly and maiking sure hes chewing) and he got very mad and went crazy on chewwing the pokin stick.

  13. He wants out! But just keep taking good care of him, do you handle him, ever try a ball outside the cage? Good Luck!

  14. They are definalty tring to get out. My hamster used to do this after i made the wire door not able to open for her any more unless i opened it. I had to bend the top hook thing down to where i had to really work on it to get it open cause she was stand on it and push till she got out. Ater i did this she started knawing the bars of the cage. They are animals dear there instinct is to burrow in the ground cause they are rodents and they don’t find the cage as suitable burrowing material. They are natural gathers so they will always do this cause they want out so they can do what comes natural gathering food.

  15. hamsters often chew cage bars as they fit thier mouth shape. don’t worry about it, its perfectly normal. try getting it some seed bars from your pet shop. you can get them in alsorts of shapes and sizes. but the best ones are the ones you can hang up on the bars. they can pull, chew, gnaw down thier teeth and they are also a tasty treat. you can even play tug of war with your seed bar. i do it with my hamster, and she loves it.

  16. they aren’t trying to get out as their little brains are to small and unpowerfull to think about ‘out’ they are probably bored, need to be handled, are living in bad conditions or have growing teeth. dont take it personally but some hamster owners dont treat hamsters properly
