Wooden toy protectant for outside toys?

i think marine varnish would work

Spar Varnish or Spar Urethane
These are used on ships. It is only availabel in high gloss. It won’t last forever, but it should give you a few years of service. After that, you may need to sand and recoat.

An exterior paint is really the best thing. When was the last time you heard of anyone putting polyurethane on their house siding?
